Probative Information Exchange Records for BIM
As a potential solution to the problems of design liability control and data security, Blockchain Technology (BCT) has been explored and investigated. First, the information exchange processes in New Zealand were mapped based on the CIC Design Guidelines, and critical design information exchange transactions were identified as integration points for BCT. Next, a Decentralised Application (DApp) prototype system was designed to demonstrate and evaluate the proposed BCT integrated process models. Finally, the prototype system was evaluated by implementing it on simulated project processes and dispute scenarios.

An improved version of PIER BIM was developed to test the feasibility of blockchain-integrated information systems to record data from an actual construction project, analyse the costs of adding transactions on a public blockchain and assess the benefits of blockchain-based records in actual project dispute scenarios. A pilot study was conducted on data from a case study construction project to demonstrate the feasibility and analyse the transaction costs. Next, we inspected the applicability of blockchain-based records to information-related issues observed in legal cases in the past. The research output for this, a journal article, is currently under review.
Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and the Technology Readiness Index (TRI) a conceptual user acceptance model for BBIS is proposed. Subsequently, 21 interviews were conducted with project managers and engineers in the New Zealand construction industry to understand the cause-and-effect nature of the determinants that affect the user acceptance of BBIS. As a result, a revised model with 8 themes and 22 sub-themes was developed. Based on this model, predictions were made on the user acceptance of BBIS. For instance, users will be optimistic about BBIS’ benefits but may not see enough value to drive a case for change. Furthermore, users will prefer using BBIS after it reaches critical mass adoption in the industry and currently, they do not view the current organisational and technical settings as capable of facilitating BBIS usage.
